Client: Town of New Salem, Massachusetts
Project: Ground-Mount Solar Facility
Completion Date: 2013
Utility Partner: National Grid
Program Participation: Aggregated/Remote Net Metering, SREC Program
Project Overview
In 2009, the Town of New Salem embarked on a mission to lead by example in the clean energy sector by establishing an Energy Committee under the Green Communities Program of the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources. As an early adopter of renewable energy initiatives, the town made significant strides toward energy efficiency and sustainability.
YSG was selected to design and construct a state-of-the-art single-axis tracker ground-mount solar facility for the town. This facility, completed and operational in 2013, became a cornerstone of New Salem’s commitment to renewable energy.
Key Features
- Single-Axis Tracker Technology: The facility utilizes advanced single-axis tracker technology to maximize energy production by following the sun's movement throughout the day, ensuring optimal efficiency and output.
- Aggregated/Remote Net Metering: The project is integrated into Massachusetts' aggregated and remote net-metering program, allowing the town to share the benefits of clean electricity generation with other municipal buildings and facilities.
- SREC Program Participation: The solar facility generates Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs), a tradable environmental commodity that played a crucial role in financing the project. The SRECs not only provided financial support but also contributed to the town's long-term sustainability goals.
Impact
The YSG Solar project in New Salem stands as a testament to the town's forward-thinking approach to energy management. The clean electricity generated by this facility powers local municipal buildings, reducing the town’s carbon footprint and contributing to Massachusetts' broader renewable energy targets. The project's success demonstrates how small communities can lead in the transition to a sustainable future.
By leveraging innovative solar technology and participating in state-level incentive programs, New Salem has set a benchmark for other towns looking to make a meaningful impact in the fight against climate change.
"The Town of New Salem has always been a leader in sustainable initiatives. Partnering with YSG allowed us to harness the power of solar energy, reduce our carbon footprint, and provide clean energy to our community. This project is a proud milestone in our journey toward a greener future." – Town of New Salem Energy Committee
