A solar power purchase agreement is a bilateral contract between two parties—the "project sponsor" and the "off-taker".
The Project Sponsor
The project sponsor is the owner and operator of the solar facility, they are responsible for generating electricity and delivering the electricity to a predetermined location, which is agreed upon by both parties. This location may be located as the "bus" or "node" on a utility-scale project, or behind-the-meter if this is a distributed generation project.
The Off-taker
The off-taker is responsible for purchasing the electricity that is generated at a predetermined price—usually priced on a $/MWH basis. The term of these contracts had traditionally been for 25 years, but as the solar industry has evolved shorter-term contracts are being signed.
