Renewable energy is a hot topic at the moment—and with good reason. Renewable energy is vitally important in the future of our climate and will play a huge role in decreasing carbon emissions across the United States. The most popular renewable energy sources include solar, wind, hydro, biomass, and geothermal. For residential purposes, solar and wind are generally the most popular, with the solar sector in particular growing massively in recent times.

Energy is important and the ability to store excess energy is vital as well. Energy storage can make for a more dependable, efficient energy system. The energy storage industry has been developing rapidly and this trend looks set to continue. Big players in the energy storage industry have invested significant resources to develop and expand energy storage technology. With this in mind, we’ve decided to take a look at some of the biggest energy storage projects in the United States.

Robinson Grid

The Robinson Grid project is located in New York. The plan is to create a 300 MW energy storage project which is operational by December 2020. This project is owned and developed by Able Grid Energy Solutions, with Con Edison as the power purchaser.

LIPA Battery Power System

The LIPA Battery Power System project is also located in New York—but is currently suspended. AES Energy Storage had planned to create a project with 400 MW of power for the Long Island Power Authority. The system was supposed to provide storage for thousands of homes on Long Island

Chelsea Energy Storage Center

This project, again located in New York, aims to be up-and-running by October 2023. The Chelsea Energy Storage Center project, currently in its pre-construction phase, is being developed by sPower—in partnership with both Con Edison and NYISO.

The 10MW Battery Storage Project

The 10MW Battery Storage Project is a 10 MW/40 MWh energy storage project located in Chandler, Arizona. This energy storage project has been up-and-running since earlier this year, with the ability to power 2,400 homes in the Phoenix area for a maximum of 4 hours. The project owner is the AES Corporation. They developed the 10 MW battery storage project and have a purchase agreement with Salt River Project (SRP).

Swiftsure Energy Storage

The Swiftsure Energy Storage project, in terms of capacity, is by far one of the largest planned energy storage projects. Set for a whopping 650 MW of capacity, this project is currently in its preconstruction phase. Developers Hecate Energy want the project operating by June 2022. It will be located in Richmond, New York.

FPL Manatee Energy Storage Center

This project, currently in preconstruction, is set for a capacity of 409 MW. The FPL Manatee Energy Storage Center will be based in Manatee County, Florida, and will go live by 2021. This energy storage project will use solar energy. The power purchaser is Florida Power & Light Company and the project owner is the Manatee Solar Energy Center.

Gemini Project Bess

The second biggest project on our list is the Gemini Project Bess. Coming in at 531 MW, it’s also in the preconstruction phase. This project is located northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, and is owned by Arevia Power. The battery component they are developing is set to allow power delivery even when the sun has set. This project aims to be operational by 2023.

Swisher 400 MW

The Swisher 400 MW project is at its preconstruction phase. This energy storage project, as the name suggests, will be located in Swisher County, Texas. The completion date is scheduled for 2024.

Crimson Energy Storage

The Crimson Energy Storage project, located in Riverside County, California, is in its early preconstruction phase. Owned by Recurrent Energy, this project will come in at 350 MW of solar energy storage and should be operating by 2020. The battery storage system would consist of 3,000 electrical enclosures, installed on concrete foundations.

Vistra Moss Landing Energy Storage

The Vistra Moss Land Energy Storage project—again in the preconstruction stage—is set for an impressive capacity of 300 MW. This system will be located in Moss Landing, California, delivering 2,400 MWh of electricity per day. This project will be up-and-running by December 2020 and is directly connected to transmission infrastructure. This infrastructure will be connected to a 500 kV substation previously used as a Moss Landing power plant. The project is owned by Vista Energy, partnered with Dynegy.

Anbaric Renewable Energy Center

This energy storage system will have a capacity of 400 MW and is currently in preconstruction. This project will be located in Somerset, Massachusetts and will serve the offshore wind industry. Construction will begin in 2021 and the project is being developed by the Anbaric Development Partners with Commercial Development Co.
